Fitness and nutrition are critical to combating the overweight crisis; as part of the HELP mission, nutrition and fitness are addressed extensively throughout the Project. Through the after school and summer camp program fitness and nutrition are addressed intensively, as well.  Through a program that focuses on inclusiveness, acceptance, individual accountability, and community, HELP provides leadership skills, awareness, and opportunities for our youth to develop healthy habits and self-esteem. Both the after school and summer programs  incorporate extensive gardening, nutrition, and cooking (including canning and preserving) classes. Programs to promote an active lifestyle may include basketball, equestrian, hiking, weight lifting, kayaking, ropes course, and swimming. Additionally, the grounds will be constructed to encourage spontaneous and informal exploration, climbing, and outdoor play. HELP creates an environment where children are both emotionally and physically safe so that they may achieve their highest potential. All children participating in the after school and summer camp programs  receive an initial physical to assess their level of fitness as well as ongoing monitoring by our staff physician.

HELP will also develop volunteer positions especially for our vibrant and growing senior citizen community. Our senior’s possess vital skills that have become moribund. Bringing children and seniors together creates magic….and it is another way in which HELP can facilitate community development.
