The Healthy Lunch

Lifestyle Project

What is a healthy lunch?

A healthy lunch comes from whole foods. Whole foods are minimally processed and derive their nutrients from the soil; they don’t need to be “enriched,” they don’t need preservatives and artificial colors. Whole food isn’t full of ingredients you can’t pronounce.  At the Healthy Lunch & Lifestyle Project, we also believe that school food should come from local farms committed to organic, sustainable agricultural practices, and should be served in re-usable containers.

Why?

?         Organic foods are produced without synthetic chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics that pollute our bodies and our environment.

?         Sustainable agriculture=stewardship of our precious natural resources.

?         Most grocery store produce has traveled 1500 miles contributing to our dependence on foreign oil and reducing our food security.

?         Supporting local farmers strengthens our local economy and community.

?         Each child’s school lunch creates an average of 67 pounds of waste each year!

The Healthy Lunch Program produces meals that meet or exceed the mandates of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010. Breakfast, lunch, and after school snacks are made daily by our chefs from whole foods, packaged in reusable containers, and delivered to our schools.

HELP collaborates on the creation of a Wellness Policy for each participating school or district in accordance with California law and provides healthy snacks in compliance with SB 12.

HELP provides meals in accordance with the National School Lunch, School Breakfast, and After School Meal (snack) programs. Meal prices are comparable to the average paid meal price in the areas we serve. HELP participates in the "reduced fee waiver" program, providing free meals to all needy students.

HELP is able to offer healthy, delicious, affordable, and environmentally conscious meals due to the dedicated support of our business partners and through community donations.

We are especially indebted to Market Street Steakhouse, which provided us with refrigeration, dry storage, and prep space as well as use of their kitchen every morning from September-December 2008. We got our start providing affordable Healthy Lunches through our awesome friends at MSS. Owned by Redding locals Wes Matthews & Kenny Breedlove, this incredible community service was provided at no cost to HELP.

HELP now operates out of our own commercial kitchens with the assistance of local chefs and nutritionists.
